Germany has pledged a further €22 million to the United Nations World Food Programme.

Today is World Food Day and the German Development Ministry (BMZ) is drawing attention to the importance of local solutions in the global fight against hunger. School feeding is one example, which often has a positive impact on the development of an entire village. The Ministry of Development’s support in this area will now be extended further: Development Minister Svenja Schulze has pledged €22 million to the World Food Program to introduce school feeding in Sierra Leone and Laos.

“The best solutions to fighting hunger are local solutions. Climate-resilient and sustainable local agriculture is the best insurance against global market fluctuations that have repeatedly pushed millions of people into hunger,” Schulze said. School Feeding is key to good local development and can transform local food and farming systems.”
