According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), U.S. President Donald Trump vowed on the 19th (local time) that he would “100%” follow through on his earlier threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries that opposed the U.S. bid to acquire Greenland.
Previously, Trump announced that, starting February 1, a 10% tariff would be levied on all goods exported to the U.S. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. The tariff rate would then rise to 25% on June 1 and remain in effect until an agreement on the “complete and absolute purchase of Greenland” is reached.
When asked by an NBC reporter whether he would truly carry out these tariff threats, Trump replied, “I will, 100%.” He further stated, “Europe should be focused on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine because, frankly, you’ve all seen what this war has brought them… That’s where Europe’s attention should be—not Greenland.”
The report noted that Denmark has already warned that U.S. military actions in Greenland could lead to the end of NATO. Last week, several NATO member states deployed a small number of troops to Greenland in what was seen as a symbolic gesture of support. Shortly afterward, Trump announced the tariff measures against these eight NATO allies.
In response to Trump’s tariff threats, eight European countries issued a joint statement on the 18th, warning that such threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk triggering a dangerous vicious cycle. The eight nations pledged to “stand united and coordinate” their countermeasures.
