The Biden administration took steps on Wednesday to prevent China from circumventing U.S. tariffs on China by exporting steel and aluminum to Mexico.
The administration said it would impose tariffs on some Mexican metal imports made in China. U.S. officials said the move would close a trade loophole that allowed cheap, state-subsidized Chinese metal to bypass existing U.S. tariffs.
The U.S. will now impose a 25% tariff on Mexican steel that is melted or cast outside North America and then turned into finished products. Previously, the steel entered the U.S. duty-free.
