In 1949, the first German Bundestag constitutional convention was held.
The German parliament, the Bundestag, held a ceremony to mark the opening of the Constitutional Convention 75 years ago. The Bundestag and the Bundesrat met for the first time on September 7, 1949 in the then seat of government in Bonn, with the Bundesrat meeting a few hours earlier. The 75th anniversary celebrations began last Friday with civic events around the Reichstag in the capital, Berlin. The official ceremony now taking place in the parliament brought the event to a close. The event was addressed by Bundestag President Barber Bass, former Interior Minister Gerhard Baum and historian Christina Morina.
About a week after the end of the Constitutional Convention, the parliamentarians elected Konrad Adenauer (CDU) by a majority vote as the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The then mayor of Cologne was elected chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and remained in power until 1963.
