Hyundai Motor has officially announced that it will position Ioniq as its exclusive battery electric vehicle brand for the Chinese market, with plans to name all future China-bound Ioniq models after planets. The first concept vehicles to debut are “Venus” and “Earth”, positioned as an elegant sedan and a rugged SUV respectively.
According to Hyundai’s statement, the move aims to strengthen its presence in China, the world’s largest new energy vehicle market. Currently, Hyundai already sells two all-electric models in China: the Ioniq 5 N and EO (also known as Elexio), while other models on sale such as the Palisade and Elantra N remain equipped with internal combustion engines.
Hyundai stated that Venus and Earth not only mark the launch of its new naming system but will also serve as a design “wind vane” for future mass-produced models. The Venus features a “Radiant Gold” paint job, with a one-curve silhouette and structured roof frame. Its exterior differs from the existing Ioniq lineup while retaining the design language of a high seating position and wide front grille. Inside, the vehicle is equipped with a full-width panoramic multimedia screen, extensive gold trim, layered ambient lighting, and an interactive virtual avatar named “Lumi”.
The Earth appears in an “Aurora Shield” color scheme with a more rugged design, featuring skid plates, exposed bolt accents, and sharp body lines. Its cabin includes rear suicide doors, a central flat-screen display, and “air-hug” seats that support occupants using flexible airbag modules. The ambient lighting mimics the effect of tree shadows, creating a serene atmosphere in line with the “shy-tech” philosophy. The vehicle also features a virtual avatar named “Aero”, with an emphasis on natural light and spaciousness.
Although official mass production plans have not been confirmed, CarNewsChina reports that Hyundai is expected to unveil its first Ioniq production model developed specifically for the Chinese market at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show.Furthermore, the brand plans to launch multiple battery electric (EV) and range-extended electric (REEV) models in the mid-to-large segments over the next three years, covering various body styles.
Hyundai Motor also noted that the Ioniq brand will gradually evolve from a single product line into a comprehensive mobility ecosystem tailored to the needs of Chinese consumers.
