Grade 3 titanium alloy is referred to as Gr3 or Gr.3

Grade 3 titanium alloy has strong corrosion resistance. In addition, this alloy has a low density and a high melting point. It is an α-type titanium alloy, which conforms to the characteristics of industrial pure titanium and is very suitable for processing and welding.

Grade 3 titanium alloy heat treatment

The heat treatment of Grade 3 titanium alloy is mainly carried out in the annealed state. The following are some recommended annealing conditions:

Annealing temperature: The recommended annealing temperature range is 670-720°C.

Annealing time: generally 0.5-2 hours.

In addition, Grade 3 titanium alloy can also be subjected to stress relief annealing. The recommended temperature range is 530-550°C for 0.5-1 hour; or 470-490°C for 2-4 hours. These heat treatment processes help relieve stress within the material and improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

For the welding of Grade 3 titanium alloys, common methods include argon shielded arc welding, plasma welding, resistance welding and gas shielded diffusion welding. Among them, argon shielded arc welding is the most commonly used method. These welding methods can effectively join Grade 3 titanium alloy and maintain its good performance and corrosion resistance.

Machining of Grade 3 Titanium Alloy

Industrial pure titanium should generally be smelted twice under vacuum (at least once in a vacuum consumable electrode arc furnace), and its castings are usually produced in a vacuum shell furnace. Industrial pure titanium can withstand both hot and cold working. Since titanium easily absorbs oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen when heated, the plasticity is reduced and the performance is deteriorated.

Therefore, when heating, care must be taken to keep the atmosphere in the furnace neutral or weakly oxidizing. Try to avoid using a reducing atmosphere, and hydrogen heating is not allowed. Forging, extrusion, rolling and drawing can be carried out on common equipment, and the temperature range of the hot processing is 800~900℃. When performing cold working, when the cold working rate reaches a certain value (such as 30% to 60%), intermediate annealing should be performed.

Application fields of Grade 3 titanium alloy

Grade 3 titanium alloys have a wide range of applications in many fields. Here are some of the main application areas:

Aerospace: Grade 3 titanium alloy is commonly used in aircraft frames, skins, engine accessories and other components. Because of its high plasticity and corrosion resistance, it can meet the requirements for lightweight and high strength materials in the aerospace field.

Marine and marine engineering: Grade 3 titanium alloy is used in marine and marine engineering to manufacture pipes, valves, pumps and other parts that are resistant to seawater corrosion, as well as components of seawater desalination systems. Its corrosion resistance enables long-term use in harsh marine environments.

Chemical industry: Grade 3 titanium alloy is widely used in the field of chemical equipment, including heat exchangers, pump bodies, distillation towers, coolers, agitators, tees, impellers, fasteners, ion pumps, compressor valves, etc. Its corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance make it ideal for handling corrosive media and high temperature media.

Automotive industry: Grade 3 titanium alloy is used in the automotive industry to manufacture pistons, connecting rods, leaf springs and other parts of diesel engines. Its lightweight and high-strength properties help improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and performance.
