TC1 alloy is a low-strength, high-ductility nearly α-type titanium alloy containing 2% α-stabilizing element AI and 1.5% β-stabilizing element Mn. This alloy has good process plasticity, welding performance and thermal stability, and has been widely used in the aviation and aerospace industry. The alloy’s long-term working temperature can reach 350°C.

The main semi-finished products of TC1 alloy are plates, strips, bars, pipes, forgings, profiles and wires. The alloy is used in the annealed state and cannot be strengthened by solid solution aging treatment. This alloy is best suited for manufacturing sheet stamped and welded parts.

Heat treatment system of TC1 titanium alloy

The heat treatment system of TC1 titanium alloy includes annealing, vacuum annealing and stress relief annealing:

1) Annealing:

The annealing treatment temperature range for bars and forgings is 700-850°C, the duration is 1-2 hours, and then air cooling is performed. For annealing treatment in other cases, the temperature range is 580-750°C, the duration is 0.5-2 hours, and then air cooling is performed.

2) Vacuum annealing:

The processing temperature range of vacuum annealing is 600-700℃, and the duration is 0.5-2 hours. The material is then furnace-cooled to below 200℃ and allowed to be naturally air-cooled when it comes out of the furnace. When performing vacuum annealing in a vacuum furnace, the absolute pressure in the furnace should not be greater than 0.09Pa.

3) Stress relief annealing:

Stress relief annealing is used to eliminate internal stress formed during parts stamping, welding and machining. The temperature range of this annealing treatment is 520-560°C, the duration is 0.5-2 hours, and then air cooling is performed. Stress relief annealing can be performed in an air furnace or vacuum furnace.

The above is a common heat treatment system for TC1 titanium alloy. Heat treatment can improve the mechanical properties and organizational structure of the material so that it can meet the required performance requirements.

Smelting and casting process of TC1 titanium alloy

The ingot should be melted in a vacuum consumable electrode arc furnace twice. The alloying element Mn is added in the form of Al-Mn master alloy. The primary melting is performed in a vacuum and the secondary melting is performed in an argon atmosphere.

Application overview of TC1 titanium alloy

TC1 titanium alloy was developed and produced in China in the early 1960s and is now widely used in the manufacture of various plate stamping parts and skins in aircraft structures and aero engines.

Forming properties of TC1 titanium alloy

-General parts are formed in a cold state. When forming more complex parts, intermediate annealing should be used, and the annealing temperature is 650-700°C. Complex parts are formed in a hot state, with a heating temperature of 550-700°C, and resistance heating or oxygen-acetylene blowtorch heating can be used.

Recommendations for the use of TC1 titanium alloy

It is recommended to use TC1 titanium alloy on various types of aircraft and engines
